The Power of Words

How Our Thoughts Shape Our Reality

person walking and their thoughts flowing into the world

Have you ever noticed how a single thought can set the tone for your entire day? It’s almost like a domino effect. One negative thought leads to another, and before you know it, you’re caught in a spiral of worry, frustration, or self-doubt. On the flip side, a simple positive thought can lift your mood, give you energy, and change your entire outlook. It’s fascinating — and a bit daunting — to realize just how powerful our thoughts and words are.

It’s not just about thinking positive or using affirmations (though those can be helpful). It’s about understanding that our thoughts and words are not just passive observations of reality; they are active participants in creating it. This is where the concept of neuroplasticity comes in — a phenomenon that shows just how adaptable our brains are.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.

This means that our brains are not fixed; they can change, adapt, and rewire based on our thoughts, experiences, and behaviors. When we repeat certain thought patterns, our brains form neural pathways that make those thoughts easier to think again in the future.

Imagine a forest with a path that gets more defined and easier to walk every time you take it. That’s what happens in our brains. If we’re constantly thinking, “I’m not good enough” or “I’ll never be successful,” we’re deepening those negative paths. Over time, those thoughts become our default setting, shaping not just how we think, but how we feel and act.

But here’s the empowering part: we can change these pathways. Through conscious effort and repetition, we can create new paths in our brain — new ways of thinking and being. This is why positive affirmations, gratitude practices, and mindful reframing are so powerful. They’re not just fluffy feel-good exercises; they’re literally rewiring our brains to think differently.

Change your words to gain your personal power

For example, if we start replacing negative self-talk like “I always mess things up” with something like “I’m learning and improving every day,” we’re carving a new path in our brains. It’s not going to happen overnight, but with consistency, this new path can become the default, making it easier to think and feel more positively over time.

Words play a crucial role in this process. They’re like the building blocks we use to create these new pathways. When we use empowering language, we’re telling our brains, “This is the new norm; this is the direction we’re going.” Words are the bridge between our internal thoughts and the external world. They give shape and substance to our inner dialogue, reinforcing our beliefs and attitudes.

For instance, saying “I’m tired” over and over again can actually make you feel more exhausted. You’re not just describing a state of being — you’re reinforcing it. You’re telling your brain and body to stay in that state. On the other hand, if you start saying, “I’m feeling more energized every day,” you begin to open yourself up to the possibility of actually feeling better. It’s not about lying to yourself; it’s about gently steering your mind toward a more positive state.

But there’s a catch. It’s not enough to simply think or say positive things if we don’t believe them. Our subconscious mind decides which thoughts get in and which don’t, based on what it already believes. So, if we’ve spent years thinking we’re not good enough, and we suddenly start saying, “I’m amazing and capable,” our subconscious might reject that as false. That’s why it’s important to ease into it, to start with thoughts and words that feel authentic and believable.

One of the most effective ways to engage neuroplasticity is to pair positive thoughts and words with strong, positive emotions. This combination creates a powerful signal to the brain, encouraging it to form new neural connections that align with our desired state of being.

When we think and say things like, “I am grateful for all the good in my life,” and truly feel that gratitude in our hearts, we’re sending out a powerful signal to the universe. It’s like tuning a radio to the frequency of what we want to attract.

And this isn’t just wishful thinking. There’s real science behind it. When we experience positive emotions, our brains release chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, which not only make us feel good but also enhance our ability to learn, create, and solve problems. In other words, positive thoughts and words don’t just change how we feel in the moment — they change how our brains function and how we interact with the world.

It’s important to remember that none of this is about ignoring challenges or pretending everything is perfect. Life can be tough, and we all face difficult situations. But by being mindful of our thoughts and words, we can choose how we respond to those challenges. We can choose to see them as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles.

So next time you catch yourself thinking or saying something negative, try pausing for a moment. Take a deep breath and see if you can reframe it in a more positive light. Instead of “I’m overwhelmed,” try “I’m capable of handling this, one step at a time.” Instead of “This is too hard,” try “I’m learning and growing through this experience.”

It may feel awkward or forced at first, but with practice, it becomes more natural. And as you start to change your thoughts and words, you’ll notice a shift in how you feel and in the results you experience. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.

Our thoughts and words are incredibly powerful tools. They’re the building blocks of our reality. By choosing them with care and intention, and understanding the principles of neuroplasticity, we can create a life that feels more aligned, more fulfilling, and more true to who we really are. And that, I think, is something worth striving for.

To put these ideas into practice, I invite you to try a simple exercise for the next month. Start each day by setting aside just five minutes to consciously choose your thoughts and words. Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Then, think of three positive affirmations that resonate with you — phrases like “I am capable of achieving my goals,” “I am worthy of love and success,” or “I am grateful for the abundance in my life.” Say these affirmations out loud with intention, feeling the emotions that come with truly believing them.

After your affirmations, write down three things you’re grateful for. These can be as simple as the sunshine, a good cup of coffee, or the support of a loved one. The goal is to start your day with a mindset of gratitude and empowerment.

Over the short term, you might notice a shift in your mood and energy levels. You may feel more optimistic, calm, and focused throughout the day. This practice helps to reduce stress and anxiety by grounding you in positive thoughts and emotions.

In the long term, this daily exercise can rewire your brain, thanks to the power of neuroplasticity. By consistently choosing positive thoughts and words, you’re creating new neural pathways that make it easier to access these states of mind. You’ll likely find that negative self-talk and limiting beliefs have less hold over you, and you’ll start to approach challenges with a sense of confidence and resilience. It’s a simple practice, but with dedication, it can have a profound impact on your mental and emotional well-being. Give it a try, and watch how your reality begins to shift.

With love and light, I encourage you to embrace this practice wholeheartedly and believe in your ability to create a positive and fulfilling reality. You are more powerful than you realize, and every thought and word you choose is a step towards the life you truly desire. I believe in you and the incredible transformation that awaits. Keep shining your light!
